Cancer Prevention

The Cancer Prevention Programs of NewYork-Presbyterian Cancer Centers focus on prevention, screening, and high-risk identification services. Building on our extensive research and clinical expertise, the Cancer Centers have developed programs to help individuals reduce the risks of developing cancer. Our programs address:
  • Primary prevention: designed to prevent the occurrence of cancer
  • Secondary prevention: to identify those at increased risk for the disease and screen for early signs/stages, when cure is more likely
  • Tertiary prevention: to monitor for and prevent the recurrence of cancer
Some cancers can be prevented through diet and lifestyle changes. Other cancers can be successfully treated if they are detected early. The most common cancers for which screening tests are available include breast, gynecological, skin, lung, colorectal, and prostate. Regular screening is essential for early detection. Services offered by NewYork-Presbyterian Cancer Centers include:
  • Routine screening exams
  • High risk evaluations
  • Chemoprevention (the use of drugs to prevent cancer in high-risk patients)
  • Genetic testing and counseling
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Lung screening for smokers and ex-smokers
  • Smoking cessation programs
